SOUTH AFRICA’S FREEDOM DAY – 22 YEARS AFTER WELCOMING A NEW NON-RACIAL DEMOCRACY

South Africans will today (on Wednesday, April 27) observe and celebrate 22 years of the attainment of freedom on this day in 1994. For the ruling ANC it will be a day when it will hold rallies throughout the country and when its party leaders will call on their supporters not to forget that it was mainly the ANC that brought them their freedom. They will want to capitalise on this especially against the background of the crisis they are facing over the vociferous and loud calls for President Jacob Zuma to step down or be removed. The ruling ANC and its leaders will ALSO go the extra mile to highlight its role in the freedom struggles in view of the local government elections taking place in August. But how do South Africans at grass roots levels view Freedom Day and what are their reactions to the current political situation – 22 years after attaining their freedom? Subry Govender filed this report for Radio Deutsche Welle (Voice of Germany)………. .

  1. This land has been hijacked first by the white colonialists, and now by an elite black in cahoots with unscrupulous capitalists on the pretexts of Black Economic Empowerment, Affirmative Action and 'foreign investment'. Madiba sold out the people, the current regime is selling out our land, economy and mineral wealth faster than a tsunami! We, the descendants of the KhoiSan remain marginalised, subjugated and discriminated as 'Coloureds'. Ironic that our Constitution talks of a non-racial society, yet, we have classification of Indians, Kallits and whites.... a contradiction in terms

  2. People will still be in economic hardships if we don't take resposibilty of paying for services . We cannot hide from the fact that one points fingers at parliament and leadership , are we also responsible citizens . We allow people to steal water, electricity, burn trains clinics etc. South Africans must take in charge and take the country forward. No where in the constitution is there free housing etc.We got to reinvent social housing . Make schools work by assisting in creating a better environment for our pupils . Parents must take responsibility by cleaning up schools cutting the grass and rejuvenating the school environment. Politicans wont come the party. Its time to stop sitting on the back bench and shouting - its time all citizens learn to volunteer their time and energy free of charge and lets make RSA happen.

  3. You also got bring the people who govern to account for their failures. These guys are getting paid a fortune in parliament, in provinces and in local governments. They must do their jobs. We did ours when we sacrificed for the freedom that Nelson Mandela and others brought to fruitition.
