EXPEL SRI LANKA FROM THE COMMONWEALTH
Thousands of protestors in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India at the weekend called for the expulsion of Sri Lanka from the Commonwealth because of the genocide committed against the Tamils of the Island.
The protestors, who belonged to twelve political parties, also called on India, Britain and other countries to stay away from the CHOGM summit to be held in Sri Lanka in two weeks' time.
The protestors demanded that Sri Lanka should be suspended from the Commonwealth until a referendum on independence of Eelam Tamils is held under UN supervision.
The protests were held in front of the British High Commission in Chennai and in front of the Government of India office in the city.
The latest protest follows a unanimous resolution against India's participation in the CHOGM summit by the Tamil Nadu Assembly a week ago.
The protests in Tamil Nadu coincide with similar protest actions and calls in the United Kingdom, Europe, the United States, Canada, Australia and South Africa for the Commonwealth conference to be moved out of Sri Lanka.
The British TV network, Channel 4, has also broadcast several programmes on the war crimes and genocide committed by the Sri Lankan Government against the Tamil people. Channel 4 has asked the question: "How much more evidence does Britain and the world need for Sri Lankan leaders to be charged in the International Court of Justice on war crimes?"
