The struggle for liberation in South Africa between the 1980s and early 1990s, when the apartheid regime had instituted some of the most repressive measures against the people, witnessed a bloody internecine war in KwaZulu-Natal.
During this period more than 20 000 people were killed in what was described as a turf war between supporters of the United Democratic Front (UDF), on one side, and supporters of the Inkatha Freedom Party, on the other.
But as far as most political observers were concerned most of the killings were the dirty work of the apartheid state at that time.
In this radio documentary compiled and broadcast in 2008, Subry Govender brings you the voices of some of the violence monitors he had spoken to during those trying oppressive times.
